When did the first three NHL point leaders meet in the playoffs?

While the Caps-Pens series on Versus, she asked a trivia question: When was the last time the top three point leaders of the NHL regular season met in the playoffs? It's been driving me and my friends crazy, and I had no luck searching. Any help would be appreciated.

On Top

On Top

$9.33

On Top is an enjoyable assault on the senses that captures the bombast of classic 1970s heavy metal and the occasional irony of alternative rock. Throughout this collection, Rye Coalition shamlessly worships at the altar of Kiss, Grand Funk Railroad, and Spinal Tap via weathered, punk-inspired chord progressions, muddy basslines, lead-footed drum patterns, and hammer-handed guitar riffs that will shake, rattle, and roll hockey arenas until the end of time. The useless beauty of this record is summed up succinctly in the bridge of “Stop Eating While I’m Smoking,” when the call and response that beckons “What is they want?/Give the kids a shot!” descends into absolute mayhem. The band’s ragged glory is snared by producer Steve Albini, who opts to leave in the mistakes and feedback while administering as little polish as possible. The cheeky moments abound, especially in “Freshly Frankness,” a silly track that pokes fun at Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You” with mock blues panache, and “Heart of Gold, Jacket of Leather,” which is the best send-up of Sunset Strip glam metal ever rendered. Their mission is to rock. Mission accomplished. ~ Tom Semioli, Rovi Performers: David Leto – Cowbell, Tambourine, Vocals, Drums; Justin Morey – Bass (Electric), Vocals; Herb Wiley – Vocals, Guitar (Electric); Jon Gonnelli – Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Piano, Vocals; Ralph Cuseglio – Vocals

When Worlds Collide

When Worlds Collide

$8.49

First published in 1932, Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer’s speculative novel When Worlds Collide was immediately purchased by Paramount as a possible project for director Cecil B. DeMille. But because none of Paramount’s scriptwriters were able to come up with an adequate screen treatment, the property lay on the shelf until 1950, when producer George Pal was casting about for a follow-up to his successful sci-fier Destination Moon. Though the film was top-heavy with special effects, Pal was able to bring When Worlds Collide in for under a million dollars, thanks to an inexpensive cast and a heavy reliance upon stock footage. The story is set in motion when Dr. Cole Henderson (Larry Keating) announces that a extraterrestrial planet is on a collision course with the Earth. No one believes Henderson’s story, save for crippled financier Stanton (John Hoyt), who finances the construction of a gigantic spaceship, built for the purpose of transporting selected survivors from the doomed Earth to another Earthlike planet. As it becomes obvious that Henderson’s predictions will come true, a worldwide lottery is held to select those people who will be rescued from oblivion by Stanton’s spaceship. In the climactic scenes, the worlds do indeed collide, with appropriately spectacular results. But will the spaceship, overloaded with humanity, be able to take off and seek out a Brave New World? Amidst the thrills, a romantic triangle emerges, involving Richard Derr, Barbara Rush and Peter Hanson. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When the Vow Breaks (Paperback)

$20.75

Now an official resource of the nationwide DivorceCare ministry, this new edition of When the Vow Breaks offers practical advice to Christians regarding the top five felt needs and issues that result from facing divorce: kids, finances, anger, depression, and loneliness.   In this sensitive and thorough guide, author/attorney Joseph Warren Kniskern recounts the emotions of his own failed marriage and shares a comprehensive study on what the Bible says about marriage and divorce. More important, he shows how God continues to work in people’s lives to provide hope and encouragement in the aftermath of divorce. Kniskern also provides important insights about how to seek reconciliation, secure proper marriage counseling, find a good attorney, and negotiate settlements and custody issues.

When Billie Beat Bobby

When Billie Beat Bobby

$12.74

This 2001 TV docudrama relates the story of tennis’ 1973 Battle of the Sexes between Wimbledon champions Billie Jean King (Holly Hunter) and Bobby Riggs (Ron Silver), an event considered by many to be an early victory for feminism. Riggs, 20 years past his prime, lives to wager on anything and everything. Seeing the rise of feminism, he decides he can make some money by challenging top female players, 30 years his junior, into exhibition matches. His first choice for an opponent is Billie Jean King, but she turns him down because she is too busy organizing the members of the female tennis tour into a de facto union, and winning tennis tournaments. After Bobby defeats the number one female tennis player in the world, Margaret Court, King realizes she needs to beat him. Following months of hype in which Bobby’s bluster is matched at every point by Billie’s confidence, the two face off in the Astrodome before a huge live and television audience. When Billie Beat Bobby was written and directed by Jane Anderson who had previously written The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom, which also featured Holly Hunter in the title role. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

When Comedy Was King

When Comedy Was King

$21.21

Robert Youngson’s second feature-length compilation of silent comedy highlights (the first was The Golden Age of Comedy), When Comedy Was King covers the years 1914 to 1929. Using snipettes from the 1929 Charley Chase 2-reeler Movie Night as a framing device, Youngson offers vintage clips from the silent era’s greatest clowns. The film’s first section is devoted to Charlie Chaplin’s formative Keystone comedies, notably Kid Auto Races at Venice and His Trysting Place (the humor in this sequence is slightly dampened by the narrator’s sanctimonious comments concerning Chaplin’s political views). We are next regaled with Fatty Arbuckle and Mabel Normand in the riotous Fatty and Mabel Adrift (1915), followed by top-hatted Wallace Beery chaining 17-year-old Gloria Swanson to the railroad tracks in Teddy at the Throttle (1916). From Sennett, we move to the studios of Hal Roach, where wacky inventor Snub Pollard holds court in It’s a Gift (1923) and Edgar Kennedy, Stu Erwin, Anita Garvin and Marion Byron try and fail to purchase four ice cream cones in A Pair of Tights (1928). Baby-faced Harry Langdon is next on the docket, dealing with aggressive kitchen help, unwelcome old pals and a mysterious spy in The First Hundred Years (1925). Next up, Buster Keaton inadvertently lays waste to a police parade in the brilliant 2-reeler Cops (1922). Brief snippets of such mid-1920s Mack Sennett stars as Billy Bevan, Andy Clyde and Ben Turpin follow Langdon and Keaton. The closing sequence of When Comedy Was King consists of the 1929 Laurel and Hardy tit-for-tat classic Big Business, virtually in its entirety. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When the Telephone Rings

When the Telephone Rings

$11.98

When the Telephone Rings bursts out of the starting blocks with “The Only Love,” a fiery rocker fueled by some high-octane guitar from the great Richard Lloyd, and for five minutes it sounds like Walter Salas-Humara and his latest edition of the Silos have finally made the top-shelf rock & roll record they’ve long had in ‘em (and almost made with Laser Beam Next Door). Sad to say, the album never kicks quite that hard again, but When the Telephone Rings manages a taut emotional intensity that’s both bracing and satisfying, and it still rocks with greater conviction than most anything in the band’s catalog. Much of the album was cut with Salas-Humara on guitar, Drew Glackin on drums, and Konrad Meissner on drums, and together they’re a tight rhythm section capable of cutting an impressive groove, with a rotating cast of friends filling out the sound. The Silos circa 2004 are a capable power trio who don’t need all that much assistance to bring these songs up to speed, and when they want to ease things back a bit, they can still hit the target (as on the moody title cut). And while Salas-Humara remains a passionate realist two decades into the Silos’ career, these 11 songs celebrate life in all its glories (as well its occasional indignities) as only someone who’s been around the block a few times can. When the Telephone Rings is rock & roll by grown-ups for grown-ups, and the maturity and wisdom inherent in this music doesn’t minimize the sweaty fun to be had. Read the lyrics and turn it up. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Dave McNair – Latin Percussion; Amy Allison – Vocals (Background); Bruce Martin – Conga; Dennis Cronin – Accordion, Trumpet; Done Piper – Vocals (Background); Mary Lee Kortes – Vocals (Background); Dave Bassett – Mellotron, Vocals (Background), Bass, Guitar; David Boyle – Piano (Electric), Organ; Drew Glackin – Lap Steel

When the Boys Meet the Girls

When the Boys Meet the Girls

$9.58

Their last album to hit the charts, 1985′s When the Boys Meet the Girls found Sister Sledge attempting to return to past form as they brought Chic’s Nile Rodgers back onboard to produce and perform. And although the move would ultimately prove ineffective, as the album appeared and hovered just out of the Top 50, this easy pairing returned the sisters to an earlier edge. With the title track backed by an eclectic arrangement, those classic punchy Sister Sledge vocals were pushed well into the front of the action. The album birthed two further standouts, as both “Frankie,” which is spun to become reggae-lite, and the heavily Rodgers-influenced club hit “Dancing on the Jagged Edge” rippled off the grooves. The latter, just barely limping to a paltry number 73 R&B, would prove the band’s last hit until their comeback in the early ’90s. Elsewhere, the Kathy Sledge-led ballad “You Need Me” emerges the best of the bunch, while the snappy “Peer Pressure” wades into wave territory, leaving the frenetic and not-quite-pleasing “Hold out Poppy” well out of the loop. When the Boys Meet the Girls is a fine effort, but this late in the day it just doesn’t pull enough tricks out of the hat to make it worthwhile. And even through it’s a major step up from their last effort, Sister Sledge is far better sampled across their earlier R&B heyday. ~ Amy Hanson, Rovi Performers: Herbie Hancock – DX-7; James Farber – Synclavier; Kevin “KAcey” Jones – Synclavier; Raymond Jones – DX-7, Synthesizer, Piano; Robert Sabino – Prophet 5, DX-7; Debbie Sledge – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Jimmy Bralower – Percussion, Drums; Joni Sledge – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Kim Sledge – Vocals (Bac

When Movies Mattered (Paperback)

When Movies Mattered (Paperback)

$34.17

If you have ever wanted to dig around in the archives for that perfect Sunday afternoon DVD and first turned to a witty weekly column in the New York Times, then you are already familiar with one of our nation’s premier film critics. If you love movies—and the writers who engage them—and just happen to have followed two of the highest circulating daily papers in the country, then you probably recognize the name of the intellectually dazzling writer who has been penning pieces on American and foreign films for over thirty years. And if you called the City of the Big Shoulders home in the 1970s or 1980s and relied on those trenchant, incisive reviews from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune to guide your moviegoing delight, then you know Dave Kehr. When Movies Mattered presents a wide-ranging and illuminating selection of Kehr’s criticism from the Reader—most of which is reprinted here for the first time—including insightful discussions of film history and his controversial Top Ten lists. Long heralded by his peers for both his deep knowledge and incisive style, Kehr developed his approach to writing about film from the auteur criticism popular in the ’70s. Though Kehr’s criticism has never lost its intellectual edge, it’s still easily accessible to anyone who truly cares about movies. Never watered down and always razor sharp, it goes beyond wry observations to an acute examination of the particular stylistic qualities that define the work of individual directors and determine the meaning of individual films. From current releases to important revivals, from classical Hollywood to foreign fare, Kehr has kept us spellbound with his insightful critical commentaries. When Movies Mattered will secure his place among our very best writers about all things cinematic.

When Baden Meets Trane

When Baden Meets Trane

$13.58

Glauco Sagebin may be a Brazilian pianist, but don’t let that fact fool you into thinking that you know what this album is going to sound like. Bossa nova and samba rhythms are more of an influence than an explicit factor in this music, and instead of fronting a large band rich with Latin percussion, on When Baden Meets Trane he leads a standard piano trio, with bassist Santi Debriano and drummer Paulo Braga. The album title is somewhat misleading — there are no Baden Powell tunes here and no John Coltrane compositions either; the phrase is meant only to be evocative of a blend of Brazilian and American jazz influences. Sagebin is a brilliantly inventive pianist, one who is at his best on slow and midtempo numbers; he seems to know himself well enough to be conscious of that fact, and after opening the program with the rhythmically blurry and slightly disappointing title track, he settles into a better set of tempi. His take on “Fascinating Rhythm” is sprightly enough, but much more sharply defined, and he layers rhythmic dislocations on top of the familiar melody with both charming good humor and mathematical precision. Even better is his gently complex rendering of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s”Olha Maria” (note how Braga’s restive drums keep the energy level high beneath Sagebin’s contemplative piano), and perhaps best of all is his gorgeous setting of “Nada Como Ter Amor,” on which his solos are simple but elegant and exquisitely tasteful. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Santi Debriano – Bass (Acoustic); Glauco Sagebin – Piano; Paulinho Braga – Drums

Taking their name to heart, the Cool Kids took a three-year stroll from their beloved 2008 EP The Bake Sale to this 2011 debut album. “Aloof”, “meandering”, and “unwilling to ‘seize the moment’” prove to be positive elements for this alt or underground hip-hop crew, both in their career and on album, as this sneaky yet rewarding, De La Soul-esque experience displays. Still, it’s a new “Daisy Age” as When Fish Ride Bicycles shakes off some of the group’s love of retro and enters the slick, post-Neptunes, post-N.E.R.D. world where anything goes, and it often goes pop. Pop-punker Travis Barker is behind the boards for “Sour Apples,” offering a production where new wave meets Odd Future as the Kids spit the skeptical hook “I met a couple honeys in my line of work/Some sour apples, some sweet as desert.” Save a couple choice cuts from the Neptunes themselves, Kids member Chuck Inglish handles the rest of the vivid production, which is flashy and backpacker all at once, and if Bun B and Ghostface don’t seem at home in these surroundings, it’s the Kids’ thug wit and prime punch lines (“I’m Park Place, you’re Marvin Gardens”) that welcome them as friends. The kinetic, mini-funk monster “Swimsuits” with Mayer Hawthorne puts it over the top, making the long wait forgivable and the album highly recommendable. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

This album represents Sam Cooke just as he was on the verge of greatness – for the most part his material was still being selected for him, with Sam providing little more than the voice for his labels at the time. However, in amongst the usual collection of standards are pointers of material that would eventually become famous the world over, material that Sam would write for himself. On this album that particular track is You Send Me, a pop and R&B chart topper in 1957 and which proved so catchy it prompted a cover version by Teresa Brewer that would also make the US Top Ten!

Swing When You're Winning

Swing When You’re Winning

$39.19

Performance dynamo and chameleonic entertainment personality Robbie Williams made a rapid transformation — from English football hooligan to dapper saloon singer — for his fourth LP, Swing When You’re Winning. Still, Williams’ tribute to the great American songbook is a surprisingly natural fit with its intended target: ’50s trad-pop patriarchs like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. And just like those two loveable rogues, Williams has brawled and boozed in the past, but isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve; in fact, he’s one of the few modern pop stars to fully embrace affecting balladry and nuanced singing. Williams and longtime producer Guy Chambers are also extremely careful with their product, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Swing When You’re Winning has innumerable extra-musical touches to carry it over: the cover features Williams relaxing in the studio in a period suit; his contract with EMI enabled the addition of the treasured Capitol logo at the top of the sleeve, and several tracks were even recorded at the famed Capitol tower in Hollywood.Fortunately, Williams is no less careful with his performances. Since he lacks the authoritative air of master crooners like Sinatra and Bing Crosby (along with the rest of humanity), he instead plays up his closer connections to the world of Broadway. His readings are dynamic and emotional — sometimes a consequence of trying to put a new spin on these classics (six of the covers are Sinatra standards, three are Bobby Darin’s). He also invited, with nearly universal success, a series of duet partners: Nicole Kidman for the sublime “Somethin’ Stupid,” Jon Lovitz for the irresistibly catty “Well, Did You Evah,” Rupert Everett for “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” longtime Sinatra accompanist Bill Miller on “One for My Baby,” even Sinatra himself for a version of “It Was a Very Good Year” on which Williams takes the first two verses (over the 1965 arrangement), then bows out as Sinatra’s original counsels him concerning the later stages of life. Though it may be an overly close tribute to a familiar original (like many of the songs here), Williams’ considerable skills with expression and interpretation largely overwhelm any close criticism. He’s definitely much better on the comedy songs, especially the hilarious “Well, Did You Evah” (originally a duet for Crosby and Sinatra in the 1956 film High Society). Lovitz’s rounded tones and faux-affected airs are a spot-on interpretation of Brother Cros, while Williams’ emulation of a boorish lug (“That’s a nice dress — think I could talk her out of it?”) is nearly perfect as well. Though arranger Steve Sidwell hasn’t done many charts (and those for the movies Moulin Rouge, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and Romeo + Juliet), he also acquits himself nicely aping classic scores for “One for My Baby” and “Beyond the Sea.” The lone Robbie Williams original is “I Will Talk and Hollywood Will Listen,” a sweeping pipe-dream fantasy of true American superstardom

When You Know

When You Know

Dianne Reeves has deservedly been hoisted on high as one of the top five jazz voices in the decade of the 2000s. Her four Grammy Awards and her music from the movie soundtrack Good Night, and Good Luck solidified Reeves’ upper-echelon placement. When You Know showcases languid and lush pop songs, with producer George Duke doing more than his share to give Reeves an orchestrated backdrop to sing songs she likes, including a string quartet and the guitar of Romero Lubambo. Her most impressive straight jazz cover, “Social Call” sports a second-chorus extrapolated lyric over the Wes Montgomery-styled electric guitar of Russell Malone. There’s nothing phony or pretentious about this one. “Windmills of Your Mind” has an interesting modal arrangement within a waltz framework, and “Once I Loved” is also done nicely. Lubambo is the shining light of the session, heard on nine tracks in his own inimitable, passionate, classy manner. ~ Michael G. Like all young Israelis, Valerie Zenatti ceased to be a private citizen on her eighteenth birthday. As is the law, she then enlisted in the national defense service, where for the next two years she endured rigorous training, harsh living conditions, and eventually, top secret missions with the elite secret service. Between target practice and sentry duty, Valerie is an ordinary teenage girl. She wonders how her friends and family back home are coping with her absence. She can’t stop thinking about her ex-boyfriend in Jerusalem. And, torn between her French heritage and her adopted homeland, she also begins to question how much she really believes in the nation she now defends with her life. Here, in the arresting voice of a woman who has borne witness, is a thoughtful, compelling memoir of a young soldier – and a country – in turmoil.

The Song Remembers When

The Song Remembers When

$4.78

1995′s The Song Remembers When is another chapter in the ongoing collaboration between Trisha Yearwood and producer Garth Fundis. Where 1993′s Hearts in Armor was a cathartic masterpiece that broke Yearwood worldwide, this record is straighter down the contemporary country lane. As usual, the material is top-notch no matter where the pair get it from. Whether the tunes come from stalwarts like Kostas, Rodney Crowell, and Willie Nelson, or relative unknowns like the phenomenal Kimmie Rhodes, this ten-song set delivers the same drama and tension with glorious, transcendent singing from Yearwood. The title-cut opener is a reverie of innocent love gone bad, recalled at a retail store counter while receiving change. Mid-tempo ballads are a Yearwood strength, and she delivers tough and true. Next, “Better Your Heart Than Mine,” written by almost-country-chanteuse Lisa Angelle and pop washout Andrew Gold, is a beautiful twining of Bonnie Raitt-styled R&B, roots rock, and neo-traditionalist country with some killer guitar playing by the great Steuart Smith. Rodney Crowell backs Yearwood on his “I Don’t Fall in Love So Easy”; it’s one of those beautiful country songs that almost isn’t. Crowell has always been able to walk the pop-country borderline, and in Yearwood’s voice he has found the perfect vocalist to execute his vision. She sings the hell out of a slick little downtempo rocker by making it sound like it’s the easiest song in the world to deliver honestly. Nelson not only contributes a tune here, but he guests both in duet and backing vocalist capacities on his own “One in a Row” and Rhodes’ “Hard Promises to Keep.” His presence adds real depth and dimension here because his thin, reedy voice stands in such sharp contrast to Yearwood’s full-throated one. “Here Comes Temptation” by Kostas is one of those groovy little pop numbers that touches on the kind of ’60s pop that came from Doc Pomus and Phil Spector crossed through the heart by a contemporary Nash Vegas feel; its glitzy surface covered by a sheen of sweet soul even if it is accompanied by a pedal steel. The disc closes with Matraca Berg’s “Lying to the Moon.” Accompanied only by her band, Yearwood takes a pop song and turns it into a country song with the ripped-up heart that comes in the grain of her voice. It’s poetry, this combination of singer and song. She couldn’t sing it any better if she’d written it; the accents create tension and drama and images from every betrayed-lover’s movie from the ’40s on, washing through the mix. Only a real singer can deliver the image from the heart of the song. Yearwood here is the heart of the song itself. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Tom Flora – Vocal Harmony; Andrew Gold – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Vocals; Gart

Like Lenny Kravitz, San Diego’s Thieves & Liars are a compendium of classic rock. No band in the ’60s or ’70s would have juxtaposed this many styles. But this trio ties them together with an ambitious concept album about Joseph, the Old Testament character. Pink Floyd-esque psychedelia starts the record, dropping into luminous pop. Immediately the warmth and naturalness of the recording stand out; the band employed old-school recording techniques, including mostly live tracking. The meat of the record is bluesy rockers in various flavors — Monster Magnet-style stoner rock in “Betrayed by Blood,” Grand Funk Railroad-esque cowbell swagger in “Road to Nowhere,” and tasty ZZ Top licks in “Good Times.” “Reconciled” is funky and minimalist, while “Seven Long Years” recalls the slow burn of Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You.” “Thieves & Liars” excel at stretching basic riffs into long, expansive explorations; most songs go a few minutes longer than expected, yet such diversions often lead to stellar heights. The centerpiece of the record, “Forgotten,” mushrooms from acoustic balladry into gorgeously baroque prog rock. It has strings, studio trickery, and guitar tones of all kinds; its nine minutes feel like a lifetime, in the best possible way. For a debut, the songcraft is amazingly subtle yet assured. Technicolor artwork by Dave Quiggle accompanies each song, making this a feast for eyes, ears, and likely, also the soul. ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi Performers: Brandon Jones – Choir, Chorus, Vocals; Clutch – Vocals (Background); Erin Breene – Cello; Jared Buckwalter – Vocals (Background), Wind; Shane Woodward – Vocals (Background); Avery Dennis – Vocals; Chad Balen – Vocals; Corey Edelmann – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Drew Gleason – Vocals;

As one of the greatest, most celebrated athletes in history, Michael Jordan conquered professional basketball as no one had before. Powered by a potent mix of charisma, nearly superhuman abilities, and a ferocious need to dominate the game, he won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and captured every basketball award and accolade conceivable before retiring and taking a top executive post with the Washington Wizards. But retirement didn`t suit the man who was once king, and at the advanced age of thirty-eight Michael Jordan set out to reclaim the court that had been his dominion. When Nothing Else Matters is the definitive account of Jordan`s equally spectacular and disastrous return to basketball. Washington Post writer Michael Leahy reveals the striking contrast between the public Jordan and the man whose personal style alienated teammates and the Washington owner who ousted him.

The Playhouse label was on a roll in 2003. During the year, they released roughly a dozen 12″ singles — most of which were of a high quality — and they also doubled their number of full-lengths, all of which were remarkable (and in Ricardo Villalobos’ case, astounding). Considering all of that, the label would’ve been foolish to not put together a third volume of their Famous When Dead series. The previous volume was a little disappointing in that its assembler, DJ Ata, chose to compile a set of tracks that originated on other labels, shutting out Playhouse’s then recent releases in the process. Famous When Dead III rectifies this issue with 11 of Playhouse’s best moments of late, most of which were released during 2003. Those who have picked up everything on vinyl won’t find anything new here; this is an anthology in the strictest sense. Each inclusion is worthy of being singled out, making the disc as strong as the first Famous When Dead — and thus any house label’s best-of sampler. The inclusion of Villalobos’ burbling “Easy Lee” is redundant, given that it’s already been on a number of DJ mixes; otherwise, there’s nothing to gripe about. IsolĂ©e’s demented “Can’t Sleep at Night,” Glove’s attitudinal “Wunderbar,” the Visitors’ loose-limbed “No Under on the Ground,” and International Pony vs. Losoul’s lurching “International Snootleg” all show how Playhouse’s roster has helped lead left-field house into pop-friendly territory, with thicker basslines and increased mobility. The oldest track, Losoul’s remix of Khan and Julee Cruise’s “Say Goodbye,” serves two purposes: it fittingly finishes off the set, and it reminds a number of people that Pluramon didn’t exactly rescue the Twin Peaks siren from oblivion when he worked with her on Dreams Top Rock. Several years on, Playhouse remain true to their name as a vital, productive label. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

When Happy Mondays fell apart in 1992, most observers assumed that Shaun Ryder would never recover from his numerous drug addictions. No one could have ever predicted that he would return to the top of the charts three years later, relatively fit and healthy, with a new band that fulfilled all of the promises of his old group. Black Grape is what Happy Mondays always were, only better. Leaving behind the stiff musicianship that plagued even the best Mondays records, Black Grape’s debut, It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah, is a surreal, funky, profane, and perversely joyous album, overflowing with casual eclecticism and giddy humor. Working with a band that is looser and grittier than the Mondays, Ryder sounds reinvigorated, creating bizarre rhymes that tie together junk culture, drug lingo, literary references, and utter nonsense. Ryder’s lyrics have always been freewheelingly impenetrable, but now he’s working with Kermit, a rapper that is the equal of his skills. Even better, the music has deep grooves and catchy pop hooks that come straight out of left field. From the blaring harmonica of the triumphant “Reverend Black Grape” and the trippy sitars of “In the Name of the Father” to the seedy, rolling “Shake Your Money” and the stinging guitars of “Tramazi Parti,” It’s Great is filled with music that goes in unconventional directions without ever sounding forced. Not only is It’s Great When You’re Straight a triumphant return for Ryder and his sidekick Bez, it’s the first album they have ever recorded that justifies all of the hype. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Bez – Maracas; Helen Vigneau – Vocals (Background); Anthony Guarderas – Bass; Danny Saber – Organ (Hammond), Bass, Keyboards; Ged Lynch – Drums, Percussion; Martin Slattery – Saxophone; Paul “Kermit” Leverage – Vocals; Paul “Wags” Wagstaff – Guitar; Psycho – Vocals;

The first-call New York based vocalist is one of those versatile singers with a dynamic range and loads of strutting style who can do it all and make it look effortless: jazz, big band, swing, pop, Broadway, and more. Not that she really needs the boost, but marketing people love it when big names brag about brilliant up and coming talents: Grammy winning vocalist Mark Murphy says, “Amy London, where have you been hiding? Don’t leave us so long without another CD.” Best known for singing in the vocal trio Jazz Babies and her lead vocal quartet part in the musical City of Angels, London contributes only two literal co-writes to this shimmering collection (the vibrant, witty, and optimistic “It Could Be So Nice,” and the cautiously romantic “Such Eyes, So Beautiful”), but she finds a way to make the standards she covers completely autobiographical. First, she’s the Midwesterner making good in the big city (“There’s a Boat That’s Leaving Soon for New York,” the soul searching medley of “Ohio/Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home”). Then, she’s the baby boomer picking quirky chestnuts from the catalog of Laura Nyro (the subtle jazz trio piece “Lazy Susan”) and Dr. Doolittle (“When I Look in Your Eyes”); and finally, the jazz sophisticate covering the classic Dizzy Gillespie tune “Wouldn’t You?” with witty, wild phrasing and sizzlin’ scat over punchy horns and a jumpy rhythm section. The album was produced by Suzi Reynolds, who is well known for her productions with Teri Thornton, Jerome Richardson, Rufus Reid (who appears on the London project on bass), and other top jazz names. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi Performers: John Mosca – Horn, Trombone; Richie Vitale – Horn, Trumpet; Amy London – Vocals; Chris Byars – Horn, Sax (Tenor), Flute, Sax (Alto); John Hicks – Piano; Lee Musiker – Piano; Leroy Williams – Drums; Rufus Reid – Bass; Steve Kroon – Percussion

After producer Irwin Allen highlighted the dangers of fire in the Towering Inferno and the dangers of water in the Poseidon Adventure, he is back to fire again but this time it is within the earth, at least for awhile. This fairly routine disaster film is set on a resort island with a volcano that is beginning to rumble. Stars include a long list of names: Paul Newman is Hank, the savvy oil driller who gets people to safety even against their will, Jacqueline Bisset is the woman he is interested in, William Holden, Eddie Albert, Barbara Carrera, Veronica Hamel and several others play individuals trapped on the island. Hank convinces some people to follow him to the highest part of the island as the volcano gets set to blow its top. They encounter several dangerous situations after the dormant volcano wakes up but nothing quite like the non-stop, action filled, death-defying scenes from the explosion of volcano movies that hit the screens in 1997: Dante’s Peak, Volcano, Eruption, Volcano: Fire in the Mountain, and a few more from around the world. They formed a virtual 1997 ring of fire. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Cars full of fast-talking British hoods and rain-soaked city streets in the dead of night–that’s the stuff of which Mike Hodges’s (CROUPIER) impossibly cool neo-noir gangster thriller is made. Clive Owen plays Graham, a former top mobster who has since retired to a nomadic life in the woods. His little brother Davey (John Rhys-Davies) meanwhile swaggers through posh parties back in the city, dealing drugs and engaging in freewheeling sex and petty thefts until he’s violently sodomized by a white-haired car dealer (Malcolm McDowell). His subsequent suicide brings Graham back into the seedy underworld he left behind on a mission of revenge. Before he can find his brother’s rapist though, he has to tangle with the new head bad boy in town (Frank Stott), who thinks Graham’s come to take his old spot back.Much like Simon Fisher Turner’s dissonant, avante-jazz score, the film dodges a straight-ahead story and instead breaks out in moody variations in the key of noir. Fatalistic dialogue, extreme masculine anxiety, a cast teeming with eccentrics, desolate streets, gray beaches, darkened elevators, and foreboding alleyways all blend into an atonal crime-jazz poem. The inestimable Charlotte Rampling plays Graham’s concerned, and much older, ex-girlfriend. Fans of the more classic gangster entries may rest assured Graham eventually does rain violence down upon the deserving.

When Pride Still Mattered (Compact Disc)

When Pride Still Mattered (Compact Disc)

$22.88

When Pride Still Mattered is the quintessential story of the American family: how Vince Lombardi, the son of an immigrant Italian butcher, rose to the top, and how his character and will to prevail transformed him, his wife, his children, his players, his sport, and ultimately the entire country. It is also a vibrant football story, abundant with accounts of Lombardi`s thrilling life in that world, from his playing days with the Seven Blocks of Granite at Fordham in the 1930s to the glory of coaching the Green Bay Packers in the 1960s. It is also a study of national myths, tracing what Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer David Maraniss calls the fallacy of the innocent past, and an absorbing account of the mythmakers from Grantland Rice to Howard Cosell who shaped Lombardi`s image. By the time he died of cancer in 1970, after one season in Washington during which he transformed the Redskins into winners, Lombardi had become a mythic character who transcended sport, and his legend has only grown in the decades since. In When Pride Still Mattered, Maraniss renders Lombardi as flawed and driven yet ultimately misunderstood, a heroic figure who was more complex and authentic than the stereotypical images of him propounded by admirers and critics. Using the same meticulous reporting and sweeping narrative style that he employed in First in His Class, his classic biography of Bill Clinton, Maraniss separates myth from reality and wondrously recaptures Vince Lombardi`s life and times.
