This Side $18.68 This Side, Nickel Creek’s sophomore release, finds bandmembers Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins out of their teens and into their twenties after playing together for 12 years. The southern California band’s self-titled debut received wide critical acclaim for welding jazz, rock, and classical music to a bluegrass base. But This Side solidifies Nickel Creek’s position as the single most original and inventive bluegrass band to emerge in the early ’00s. Hardcore bluegrass fans wary of experimentation or even progressive bluegrass may scoff at this claim. But, when it comes down to it, the gorgeous, open production by Alison Krauss gives Nickel Creek’s guitars, mandolins, and fiddles the space to dance through sparkling and genuine arrangements. Covers of everything from Pavement’s rollicking Terror Twilight highlight, “Spit on a Stranger,” to Carrie Newcomer’s scathing folk “Should’ve Known Better” to the traditional “House Carpenter” are given elegant and unique twists. Plus, Thile and the Watkins siblings’ originals, like the sleepy, subtle “Speak” and the darker “Beauty and the Mess,” easily outdo the likes of folk-rockers Dave Matthews and Hootie & the Blowfish, while forging a new style to rejuvenate a genre that has always been a bit of a dark horse. Post [DualDisc] $11.18 After Debut’s success, the pressure was on Björk to surpass that album’s creative, tantalizing electronic pop. She more than delivered with 1995′s Post; from the menacing, industrial-tinged opener, “Army of Me,” it’s clear that this album is not simply Debut redux. The songs’ production and arrangements — especially those of the epic, modern fairy tale “Isobel” — all aim for, and accomplish, more. Post also features Debut producer Nellee Hooper, 808 State’s Graham Massey, Howie B, and Tricky, who help Björk incorporate a spectrum of electronic and orchestral styles into songs like “Hyperballad,” which sounds like a love song penned by Aphex Twin. Meanwhile, the bristling beats on the volatile, sensual “Enjoy” and the fragile, weightless ballad “Possibly Maybe” nod to trip-hop without being overwhelmed by it. As on Debut, Björk finds new ways of expressing timeworn emotions like love, lust, and yearning in abstractly precise lyrics like “Since you went away/I’m wearing lipstick again/I suck my tongue in remembrance of you,” from “Possibly Maybe.” But Post’s emotional peaks and valleys are more extreme than Debut’s. “I Miss You”‘s exuberance is so animated, it makes perfect sense that Ren & Stimpy’s John Kricfalusi directed the song’s video. Likewise, “It’s Oh So Quiet” — which eventually led to Björk’s award-winning turn as Selma in Dancer in the Dark — is so cartoonishly vibrant, it could have been arranged by Warner Bros. musical director Carl Stalling. Yet Björk sounds equally comfortable with an understated string section on “You’ve Been Flirting Again.” “Headphones” ends the album on an experimental, hypnotic note, layering Björk’s vocals over and over till they circle each other atop a bubbling, minimal beat. The work of a constantly changing artist, Post proves that as Björk moves toward more ambitious, complex music, she always surpasses herself. Shade Side Sunny Side $11.98 For their first album in six years, and seventh overall in 21 years, For Against have made a big change. Original guitarist Harry Dingman, who left the group after 1988′s second album December, returns after 20 years, and has completely altered/overhauled the band’s approach and sound in a fascinating way. His position in those decades in-between was mostly manned by Steven “Mave” Hinrichs, who himself did a stunning job playing a thick, quick, ringing jangle-pop style. The group mostly followed that lead. Now, Dingman’s return has opened up For Against’s stylistic approach to take in dollops of ‘80s Brit post-punk moody textural creativity, ranging from the echoey but harsh Comsat Angels of Sleep No More, whose influence is felt in the early going of Shade Side Sunny Side, to the harder side of Warsaw/Joy Division, to the more insular grace of Section 25 (whose “Friendly Fires” is covered), to the timeless beauty of Pale Saints, Seventeen Seconds-era Cure, and All Fall Down-era Sound. Dingman’s playing is far more sophisticated and varied than the already impressive hyper spiderweb of guitar tones he once contributed years ago. Thus energized, leader Jeffrey Runnings’ trademark staccato-note basslines and anguished/embittered/forlorn/flabbergasted lyrics anchor the band’s previous strengths to all the new “shades” Dingman brings, as does rock-solid drummer Paul Engelhard, who adjusts to the lighter tones and tempos perfectly, yet still brings his own rapid-fire fills when applicable. The emotional complexity of Shade Side Sunny Side thus hits like a movie inside your head. Runnings himself seems less tormented by romantic and fraternal intrigues than in the past, singing lines such as “I never met a fraud like you” or the repeated “What happened to you?” with a philosophical detachment and bemusement he’s never shown before. In this case, he lets those washes of Dingman’s guitars, gathering and threatening from the distance and then suddenly swooping from above, to weave the tangled emotional web his word suggest — letting his own stabbing, stick-on-one-note bass and Engelhard’s beatings on the tom toms to put the knife in your side. This is just a fabulous work, one of the most unnerving and yet often resplendently gorgeous records in some time. The Other Side $7.94 The Other Side is Godsmack’s first acoustic offering. Totaling seven songs, it’s not quite a full album. But fans will note its mixture old and new material, as well as the departure from Sully Erna and co.’s normal metallurgical sonic signature. The primary influence here is Alice in Chains. New track “Running Blind” is dominated by the high-low harmony sound that’s become Alice in Chains’ legacy, as is “Re-Align,” which otherwise doesn’t drift very far from Faceless’ electrified version. The guitars — and guitar solos — are acoustic throughout Other Side, and the percussion is lighter and more refined than the normal ‘Smack pummel. As for the rest of the new material, “Voices” suggests the more subdued work of the band’s peers (Seether, Staind, etc.), while “Touché” crosses threads of the Allman Brothers with the usual post-grunge throttle. It’s also a little free advertising for Erna’s vanity imprint and its new signing, Dropbox, whose Lee Richards and John Kosco guest. In a way, The Other Side feels like a vanity project for Godsmack itself, the sort of thing a band releases in between official studio records, or just because it can. Wire Post to Wire $8.47 The Standard took their time with Wire Post to Wire, the result being an album that’s as gorgeously tasteful as it is frighteningly tense. There’s something anxious in the pattering rhythm to the Clinic-ish “Even Numbers,” and as the guitars rush forth you might expect an explosion. Instead, Jay Clarke’s sophisticated piano line takes the fore, matching the fragility in Tim Putnam’s wavering vocal. It’s a pretty incredible thing to hear, this maturity. After all, aren’t these post-everything bands supposed to be chock-full of vim, vigor, spike, and squelch? On the contrary, the Standard revel in fueling their angular (and angry) side with that incredible piano of Putnam’s, and a lyrical mystery that’s usually unsettling, but occasionally heartbreakingly gorgeous. It’s like crying over a foreign film whose language you do not understand. The darker side of Wire has its day in the black sun with “Ghosts for Hire,” which stutters and stops in post-punk melancholia as the guitarists build aching melodies from echoing stairways. The six-plus-minute “Folk Song” begins as a solo piano piece, with Putnam seeming to lament a mother’s grief over her lost son. But his folksinger character becomes a rich and gluttonous man, and forgets his idealism as the song’s steadily building instrumentation turns shadowy. By the climax it’s unclear just what’s happening, but Putnam sure sounds rueful. The Standard prove adept at these emotional shifts throughout Wire Post to Wire — it’s affecting stuff, even if the meanings aren’t entirely clear. “Unicorns and Chemicals” is built around a Bacharach-ian melody, but is filled with murky lyrics about sanitarium ruins (?) and faraway plinking synthesizers, putting it closer to a sort of art-damaged Nick Cave. The spidery pinprick guitars of opener “Metropolitan” return for “A Black Machine,” where they scatter over distorted bass and a stark pace akin to classic Mission of Burma. This is how it goes with the Standard and Wire Post to Wire. Comparisons to a round of past genres and artists abound, but the album is startlingly unique. Reformation Post T.L.C. $10.38 Being a fan of Mark E. Smith’s the Fall is no doubt nowhere near as frustrating as it must be to be in his band, what with the way he fires people, it must go as far as demoralizing. Still, the fans were hit pretty hard on the way to Reformation Post-TLC when commander Smith dumped the cracking Fall Heads Roll band in the middle of an American tour, save the keyboard-playing wife. They were just awful, he claimed, and while they certainly were not, the new Fall (“Fall #45″ or something) and their new album (don’t even try to count them) is filled with new life, new ideas, and every reason the cult needs to keep worshiping this fickle, inconsiderate, and ungracious band. Pulling another obscure idea out of an extremely eclectic record collection (Lee “Scratch” Perry, the Move, and the Monks have been covered before, Merle Haggard, Amon Düül, and Captain Beefheart are all referenced later on this album) the opening “Over! Over!” rips a bit of the United States of America’s “Coming Down” and adds that Fall throb, that simple and infectious Fall sense of melody. Typically literate and wandering Smith lyrics are in effect, plus a gravelly grumble from some backup singer imitating a Muppet. Smith joins said Muppet and starts grumbling right along towards the end as the drummer kicks it double time, working the hi-hat. The track is representative of so many other surprises on the album since “muso” moves Smith would normally balk at often mix with the leader’s extremely loose and mischievous delivery, bringing to mind nothing they’ve done before. There may even be a whammy bar on this album and, for the first time, incidental chatter with bandmembers actually laughing clearly audible. The album’s title is supposedly inspired by fellow Manchester bands that are “Totally Lecherous C-Words” reuniting and it’s easy to see how Smith is flippantly using this half-American band — another first — to make sure he has no connection to legend, reverence, or anything else graying musicians receive from their graying fans. He’s inspired, as are the band who are given more room to roam than previous editions and in turn offer more ideas. The sprawling Krautrock of “Das Boot” might scare away the meek with its ten minutes of slowly churning basses and Michael Karoli-inspired guitars, but if you can handle that the only problem left is the loose-to-a-fault “Insult Song.” The track is unmistakably B-side material and while that won’t ruin anything for fans it does speak to the album’s inability to play nice and save the glib ideas for peripheral releases. Course the way Reformation fights importance with such enthusiasm and muscle is what makes it such a fascinating album. The music of The Other Side of the Looking Glass, however, is the very definition of barrier-exploding. There is a jittery, kinetic, midnight vitality to both the sound and sentiment expressed on this solo debut, yet Alias has an almost disarmingly serene way of wading through the mazes of his mind. “Opus Ashamed” with labelmate Doseone, “Jovial Costume,” and “Pill Hiding” are authentic — and awesome, startlingly so — drum’n'bass, much closer to Roni Size & Reprazent’s groundbreaking electronica than anything that has come out of the rap underground, let alone the mainstream. But then, aside from a handful of artists (OutKast, for instance), Alias proves himself more willing than most MCs or producers to take blind leaps forward, both musically and lyrically, stylistically and intellectually. Rather than “traditional” rap tunes, some of these songs play like knotted post-doctoral philosophical treatises set to airy and agitated musical scores — tracks like “Angel of Solitude,” “Dying to Stay,” the exceptional “Getting By (Version 2),” “Inspirations Passing” — piercing psychological expositions that go well beyond any conceivable definition of the conventional. If that sounds like too heady an objective for what, in its fundamentals, is pop music, maybe it is. But The Other Side of the Looking Glass without question grows hip-hop outward in almost every way, and does so such that the music is as fascinating as it is challenging and difficult. Ugly Side of Love $18.39 There may indeed be nothing new under the sun, but the cunningly crafty Bristol duo Malachai have hit on some fairly novel and idiosyncratic ways of reinvigorating the sounds of bygone days, while drawing their proudly retrogressive sonic cues from a surprisingly under-plundered patch of the pop-history dustbin. Ugly Side of Love is a rambunctious pastiche of classic British AOR, circa 1968-1973 — a pastiche in the sense of unabashed stylistic mimicry — steeped deep in the grooves of psychedelic and progressive rock, sunny power pop, high-octane blues, gritty white boy soul, and even early metal – as well as a motley and often muddled hodge-podge, structurally and sonically. Unlike other nostalgia-fueled, sample-driven aural patchwork quilts, however — the Go! Team’s Thunder, Lightning, Strike and Jason Forrest’s Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash are both useful reference points, although this album isn’t anywhere near as giddily hyperactive — this album presents Malachai less as cheeky post-everything ironists than as grinning but largely reverent revivalists, playing things surprisingly straight-faced behind their monkey masks. Even if their purposely murky working methods are clearly a good deal removed from your typical ’70s psych-blues outfit, Ugly Side of Love would sound shockingly plausible if presented as a newly rediscovered artifact from four decades past. Virtually every sound here, including all sorts of rudimentary electronic manipulations — backwards tape loops, vocal phasing, cavernous reverb, vinyl scratches, rhythmically slipshod looped drum breaks — could conceivably have been heard on any number of the era’s trippier platters, and apart from a couple of credited and/or recognizable sourcings (the Guess Who’s “Hand Me Down Love” forms the basis for “How Long,” and, apparently, a loop of sunny soft popster Daniel Boone powers the blisteringly righteous stomper “Snowflake”), it’s confoundingly hard to tell how much of the album is composed of samples, even if Malachai are sometimes downright sloppy about leaving audible seams. Indeed, the ramshackle quality of the production is entirely in keeping with the loose, quasi-analog aesthetic, and given the psychedelic excesses of the period, the album’s formal oddities (brief, inscrutable interludes; barely there song structures; one-off stylistic cul-de-sacs like the peppy beach-party strum-along “Moonsurfin’” or the gloom-soaked, Geoff Barrow-assisted lysergic dirge “Only for You”) might not be so out of place either.
