If you have ever experienced a day when the fish were to beat the fly, you have had problems in setting the hook, then it is likely that the hooks you have with the help of a few good shots took on a grindstone. The moral of the story is to ensure that you do not pull over the truck, if you tie fly patterns for the upcoming season!
There is another way you can run your hook to weaken and possibly break at inopportune times, and that the improper Removal of the barbs is. Often I have seen anglers remove the sting by a pair of needlenose pliers on the point, and press the barbs on. A better way to do this is to have up to the point of the hook between the pair of pliers with a pair of pliers, which over the barb, and press the elimination of barbs. They will weaken the pressure on the length of the point-spread risk, rather than a smaller area of the hook.
